Executive Dysfunction
One of the most painful aspects of executive dysfunction is that wanting to do something doesn’t necessarily make your brain able to begin it. You may stare at a task you desperately want finished and still not move. Multi-step responsibilities can become mentally tangled. Transitions are difficult. Working memory disappears at inconvenient moments. Time may feel abstract until suddenly there isn’t enough of it. From the outside, these experiences are easily mistaken for procrastination or lack of motivation. That misunderstanding can eventually become internalized.
Therapy can help detach executive-functioning difficulties from shame. We can identify where tasks are getting stuck, reduce unnecessary friction, externalize memory and organization where helpful, and develop individualized systems that work for you.
